Easy steps to Meditation

Our mind is always busy, we constantly have thoughts running around in our head. That's pretty tiring, no? So, how can we give our minds a well-deserved break? We meditate! Now, it's commonly thought that meditating is a real struggle, you shouldn't think of anything at all, it's something for trained monks...Truth is, meditating is easy and natural, anyone can practice. And we can do it anytime and anywhere!


Yogis considered our mind to be like a crazy monkey which was stung by a scorpion (imagine that!) We need to calm that monkey down! What we try to do during meditation, is give that monkey a job. Focus on only one thing. This way, the mind becomes peaceful.


Practicing even a few minutes of meditation daily reduces stress, improves memory and concentration, and gives us an overall sense of well being. We get to enjoy life more happy and aware.


EASY STEPS TO MEDITATION:


  1. Sit in a comfortable position, with your back, neck, and head in a straight line. You can be cross-legged or even just sitting in a chair, the point is to feel comfortable.

  2. Rest your hands on your knees, palms facing up. (You can touch your thumb with your index finger for chin mudra)

  3. Close your eyes, take three deep breaths (yogic breaths)

  4. Now set a rhythmic breathing pattern and focus on your breath: Inhale OM 1,2,3 - Exhale OM 1,2,3

  5. When the mind wanders, gently bring it back to focus on your breaths. Don't force it, let thoughts come, and then let them go.

  6. You can bring your attention to the point between your eyebrows (Third eye - Ajna chakra) or to the middle of your chest (Heart - Anahata chakra)

  7. Continue the conscious breathing. Inhale OM...Exhale OM

  8. Meditate for as little or as long as you want. Try to do it often. Even just a few minutes a day can make a big difference!

  9. Have fun with it!... Don't stress, there's no way of doing it wrong. No need to put pressure on yourself, just relax and enjoy!

:) Yogi pro tip: Take advantage of your walk in the park, sit down and meditate for a bit, it's amazing to be surrounded by natural sounds and breath in the fresh air!
